Queensland’s first integrated perinatal mental healthcare service opens at South Brisbane
Named after the founder of the Sisters of Mercy Catherine McAuley, Catherine’s House delivers on Mater’s Mission to respond to unmet community need, with one in five women and up to one in ten men experiencing a perinatal mental health diagnoses around the arrival of their baby.
Located alongside Mater Mothers’ hospitals, Catherine’s House provides an In-patient Unit with 10 rooms (eight public and two private) where parents with severe mental health diagnoses including postpartum psychosis, anxiety and depression can stay with their babies while receiving the care they need.
Catherine’s House also provides a range of day programs to support parenting and mental wellbeing, individual and group therapies and consultation suites for 13 public and private mental health practitioners. Mater’s existing perinatal services, including the Parenting Support Centre and Parent Aide Unit, will relocate to Catherine’s House next month.
Infant and perinatal psychiatrist Dr Beth Mah has taken on the inaugural role of Director of Catherine’s House for Mothers, Babies and Families at Mater Hill.
The Queensland Family Cohort Team who are located in Aubigny Place, are excited to have Dr Mah and Catherine's House right next door. Welcome and we are so excited for what this service will do for our Queensland families.
