Supplement Use During Pregnancy
Dietary supplements, guideline alignment and biochemical nutrient status in pregnancy: Findings from the Queensland Family Cohort pilot study
This study found that multiple micronutrient (MMN) supplementation during pregnancy is common in high-income countries, with women receiving private obstetric care, holding private health insurance, and following dietary recommendations more likely to use these supplements. While supplements help many meet essential nutrient guidelines for folate, iodine, and iron, it also raised concern for excess nutrient intake. This study underscores the importance of developing effective strategies to optimise nutrient intake during pregnancy, focusing on promoting balanced whole-food diets alongside the appropriate use of MMN supplements to support maternal and fetal health.
